Getting ready to clean VM-ish Fleece

There's a lot on the internet about how to card wool and spin wool; how to start with a commercially prepared Top or the myriad other forms available for purchase.  There are many discussions on how to diplomatically let your esty or eBay seller know that your are displeased with the amount of "the Barn" recieved along with the wool or alpaca fiber.

So, just for the sake of covering the topic: Let's say that I've sheared my very own sheep and it's got a lot of VM and other sheepishness in it. (Because we have, and it does.) Nobody to notify (or complain to) but myself. Can't bear to just throw it away...... Can't let DH know it's been a "worthless waste of time" to have a couple of sheep..........

How's this for a plan:

1. Shake out the fleece/blanket that is still all together. But, it's really more in clumps than a fleece.

2. Gently spray with a hose on Mist while the fleece clumps rest on a sheet of expanded aluminum lath like they use for stucco. Think of a large strainer - only flat; holes are big enough to put a pencil through, but not a finger.

3. Wash and rinse in plenty of very cool water with a tiny bit of detergent.  (Very worried about felting the wool that is "irreplaceable")

4. Let dry.

5. Comb out chunks with livestock combs used to prep show animals.

6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 every time DH goes to work for as many repeats as necessary.

7. Get out the good hand carders.

8. Never, ever let on what a PITA this has been. When asked, smile and recite what a joy it is to work with REAL WOOL we raised our very selves.

9. Find out how on earth the real sheep raising people keep the little beasties clean.

Nationwide Knitting Craze Hits Four State Area

Nationwide Knitting Craze Hits Four State Area
Really?  Are we having a Nationwide Knitting Craze?  Again?  I love a good craft craze!

It'll be great if we do.  Wal-mart's sure missed the boat though.  As far as I can tell, they've cut back all their craft department offerings in the stores that I've been to lately.

Wal-mart's loss will be the LYS's gains though, won't it?  Maybe the big W has lost it's strangle-hold on the pulse of mid-america.  That would be sooooo good.  I could really look forward to the return of LYSs on Main Street and at the Strip Mall.  Actually, wherever and whenever I can find more yarn and fiber, I'm good with it.

Buffalo Down at Buffalo Gold

Buffalo Gold produces Buffalo Down fibers. The statistics on this stuff are awesome. The micron count is supposed to be between 11 and 13 (cashmere is 15 - 16) so it should be even softer!
There's wonderful information on the website about how they started the business, and all kinds of Buffalo (American Bison) facts. Great Photo! If you're squeamish, don't go to the part about how they get the fiber. But, really, they're doing a good thing here; if they weren't there to harvest this fiber it would be wasted. So, get over it. I am still, as always, perplexed by the economics of sending this around the world to have it processed. They list where it's "grown", harvested, skirted, scoured, dehaired, and then spun. Man, how much of the cost of this is just in transportation?
Yarn, roving, kits, batts, etc. Leather, other stuff....
Well, it's not really available directly from them .........
They don't sell online. There is a lengthy list of LYS, and most people should have a shop reasonably nearby. I'm just a little deflated. I was really looking forward to ordering a little fluff online to spin on the (still unnamed) Rick Reeves wheel that I'm learning to use. So, I emailed the "closest" LYS after finding that their website only list two small knitting kits. I'm still not even sure what kind of price range I'm looking at for fiber? The known prices that I have are from a different LYS that is far too far to drive to: $45 for 25 g of Lace Weight or $69 for 50 g of Fingering Weight Yarn with patterns for scarves.
So, in my own little ADHD, OCD, way, I'm waiting to hear back from them and then might figure out how to work in a 4 hour round trip excursion into my evening. Then there's the $12 to $15 in gas that it'll take to get there and back. There's a really good restaurant near the LYS. Maybe I can talk the DH into driving me, and I can knit all the way there and back. So, that'll be another $20 minimum in meal cost. So, we're up to an estimated $80 for a net gain of enough yarn to make one scarf. Hmmmm, going to look at the budget before I get too excited about this.

Enjoying my new calendar

OK, so far, we're into the year by over 2 weeks.
This is not a FUG alert. So far, nothing fuggly has passed my way. I've had blinders on since being blinded on the elevator a couple of weeks before Christmas by a Holiday Sweater.
Really, I am a fan of Holiday Sweaters. I do love them, truely I do. But this one was over the top with visual noise and clashing (in my opinion) colors.

But, it's on with the New Year: And, the Stitch 'n Bitch calendar has not disappointed yet.
The photo of the January 12 hat was not to my taste, but I'm reserving judgement until I get the hat done in my choice of yarn.
On Jan. 15, Monday's Fave Fiber was a very fluffy olivish greenish, and from the cubbie warren pathway, the skein looked like something quite questionable. I got a few raised eyebrows, but proudly displayed the day anyway.
I have had a few days when I tried the Weblink of the day, on the day, at lunch, and couldn't get through. Imagine that! Do you think this might be because the calendar is popular enough to cause a run on a site? Hope it doesn't crash anyone's server. Does that happen anymore? Or was that just in the early stages of the internet?
Anyway, I'm hopeing to plot my way through the new year with SNB page a day at work, Pattern a Day at home, and Stitch a day everywhere else.
Yep, DH knows I've lost it now.
